The state of prison life at present is a curse
disguised as a blessing. For one thing, arrest rates have risen and crime is
down. While this (relatively) implies an improvement, it actually comes at the
cost of more crowded prisons and a tougher state of affairs in terms of
correctional facility maintenance, since funds for prison upkeep has hardly
risen along with the sheer influx of criminals. The mugshots keep
getting taken, arrests are happening left and right, and prisons are now
overflowing with inmates packed into prison cells like sardines in a can.Look

financial crisis has also affected educational and correctional programs for
these convicts, such that inmate-versus-inmate violence has also risen.
Why Prisons Have Become Even Bigger Hellholes Than
Before
·
There have been improvements on other areas in
reaction to this trend. For example, prison food preparation... while hardly
something you'd call gourmet-class... has significantly enjoyed some upgrades
when compared to the state of food sanitation and hygiene in the past. However,
this is more of a reaction to the crowded prisons nowadays (i.e., if there are
more prisoners, bad food will be able to affect a more significant number of
them than in the past).
·
The upgrades don't change the fact that prison wardens and guards are having a tougher time keeping the inmates from running the asylum, so to speak. Prison rape has become so rampant, so much so that it's now being references by mainstream Hollywood shows as part of prison culture. Then again, state prisons are the most affected by these changes; federal prisoners have a better life that those in state prisons.

In other words, the type of prison life a prisoner
could get depends on the types of prisoners housed in a given facility. Federal
prisons are less dangerous and aren't full of dangerous criminals because
they're filled with white-collar convicts plus they actually get better
accommodations and funding.
